Description: The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) describes English or English-language letterpress materials published before 1801, including books, lists, advertisements, rules, songs, election propaganda, and other ephemeral items. It contains records for items of all types published in Great Britain or its colonies or in English from 1473-1800.
Materials indexed in ESTC may be available electronically in the following full-text collections at UNC-Chapel Hill:
Early English Books Online (EEBO) The electronic body of materials comprising the microfilm collections EEB I & II, 1473 – 1700 (see below). Provides bibliographic indexing, linking to scanned PDF page images. Some texts are now (ascii) searchable.
Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) The electronic body of materials comprising much of the microfilm collection for the Eighteenth Century collection (below). The microfilm collection may contain items that have not been or will not be digitized. Contains full-text images and text-searchable pages.
Early American Imprints, Series I. Evans (1639-1800) An electronic body of more than 36,000 titles printed in America, 1639 – 1800. Contains full-text images and text-searchable pages.
Literature Online (LION) A searchable body of more than 350,000 English-language literary texts (ascii) from Anglo-Saxon times to the present. Texts that are indexed in ESTC and are literary in nature may be available and searchable in LION.
The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) combines four resources aiming to provide a complete bibliography of English-language printed works published anywhere, and works printed in any language in Great Britain, North America, and any other territorial positions of Great Britain, prior to 1800, and to list the whereabouts of surviving copies and note the existence of facsimiles in microfilm. In doing so it unites and is augmenting enormously the listings edited by Pollard and Redgrave (1473-1640), Wing (1640-1700), those amassed and still being collected as the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue, as well as those listed in Evans’ Early American Imprints, Series I (1639-1800).
The database also serves as a reel/fiche guide and index for four huge microform sets reproducing the works included, available at UNC-Chapel Hill or at Duke. Perkins Library at Duke has Early English Books: Series I, 1473-1640 (Pollard and Redgrave) in the Microfilm Collection, call number N2377, Early English Books: Series II, 1641-1700 (Wing Short Title Catalogue), call number N2377, and Evans’ Early American Imprints, Series I, 1639-1800, call number M5554s (microfiche). UNC at Chapel Hill has The Eighteenth Century collection in Davis Library Microforms, call number Microfilm 1-2586. UNC also has Evans, Series I in Davis Library Microforms, call number Micro-card 1-6.
The database is searchable by author, title, place, publisher, and date, words in notes, and for the pre-1700 material, using subject headings.
